Emma: A feminist take on true crime. Like what did you see that that's what you said right yeah yeah I mean because to me I have a lot of friends that love true crime right? And I can see the appeal but sometimes I feel there's a portrayal of often female victims that's just a little it doesn't speak to me. I mean what did you see in terms of your spin on how you wanted to do this based on the wealth of like true crime podcasts and shows that you could see.

Jena Friedman: So a lot of it is different. There are a lot of things that I set out to do differently. We don't show gruesome crime scene photos. I don't interview serial killers. In a couple episodes, I don't even name them. It's less about the actual case and more about the larger systemic injustice. And it's crazy that we've been, you know, consuming true crime and there's so much of it for decades. and also so much of it is just not really told from that perspective you know? Like it's not about the guy who kills a woman it's about the parole system that allowed the guy to get out early and kill the woman because he had many many charges of sexual assault but because we don't take sexual violence against women seriously these guys are really good at evading justice. serial offenders. but it's also at the same time I'm not like trying to be nancy grace or like pro-mass incarceration. So it's like a measured approach. The best way I can describe it is if I could make it like the dream version of the show. I would say it would be like a daily show meets a dateline. where it's like less about the crimes but you're using crimes to bring in people who are like true crime junkies. and then you're just kind of zooming out and talking about why does this keeps happening. What are things that we can do to stop it from happening?
