Rachel calls in from northwest Ukraine to give us an update on the Russian invasion of the country. Rachel was living in Kyiv but has fled with her flatmates to a village northwest of the city. She discusses what it's like being an American in this conflict and the shock everyone around her is feeling.

Rachel: Oh fantastic hey this is Rachel I am calling from northwest Ukraine at this moment.

Emma: Rachel, thank you so much for calling. I hope you're okay.

Rachel: Well yeah that's all thank you relative but yeah i don't know where should i begin?

Emma: Well I mean really just start with what has this week been like for you. and the people around you.

Rachel: Definitely I'm part of in some ways I'm still stunned in others it's been tragic. It's been infuriating. I could say I did not expect this. I'd say really nobody did. and even you know nuts [ __ ] nerds that are gloating about it. I know that you change the goalposts every other day. I kind of feel like they're getting credit for something they didn't necessarily do either. It's yeah I live. I've lived in Kyiv for more than five years. I lived in Moscow for a while before that as well. I had not intended to leave the city, in fact, I wanted to stay and kind of be in solidarity with people taking the most of it, even going further east. I got friends out there who I wanted to help. ultimately after the bombings that took place in strategic points well all pretty much all throughout the country. Wednesday night. Thursday morning. and speaking with my flatmates and keys and realizing I don't have the skills that I could particularly be good in an urban war zone. and so and the simplest just to go to their home village in the northwest. But even that has its own challenges as I think your first guest Derek was saying is that there is targeting from yeah again from Russia, from Belarus, and even from Transnistria. this little frozen conflict breakaway region of Moldova from coming to the south near Romania. But up here, yeah, we are pretty close to Belarus. So it's not that I'm not a hundred percent out but certainly not like Kyiv where I've seen a lot of people where again where I lived and just detonations every which way.
