Far Right Putin’s Nazi Hunting Claims Are Totally Absurd

Russian President Vladamir Putin is making the claim that his invasion of Ukraine is a mission to de-Nazify the country. While there are far-right elements in Ukraine it is not what the entire state is based on and is an excuse to make a territorial land grab of one of his neighbors.

Emma: the myths that Putin is using to prop up this invasion. What are some of those myths he's hearing back to? because his rhetoric has been nakedly imperialist obviously/ but it's been anti-communist as well. I mean kind of deeming the communist regimes I mean probably most focusing on Gorbachev for example to weakness. And it seems more old school than that. I don't know some of the ways that it's been characterized by members of the press.

Guest: Sure I mean yeah his I mean his comments about the Soviet Union and criticisms of soviet leaders. Basically suggesting that they created the country, the nation of Ukraine, or the state of Ukraine out of whole cloth. It harkens back there's a very complicated history between these peoples. Between the Russians, the Ukrainians, the Belarusian people as well. I mean there's a shared history. There is a common origin story that goes back to Kievan Rus in you know 10th century and extends all the way to the present day. And so you know when what Putin is doing I think is taking a kernel of historical fact and using it in a way that you know is really just propagandistic. He's using it to deny the very notion of a Ukrainian people or Ukrainian state or the legitimacy of a Ukrainian state. which you know which is you know playing around with this kind of stuff in ways that it's not meant to be done. Obviously, there is a history thereof a separate Ukrainian people. parts of Ukraine were you know well outside the Russian orbit even during the days of the Russian empire. so there is a distinct history even if they're intertwined to a great extent. and for Putin to employ that at all in a way that tries to deny the existence of a Ukraine, a modern you know in the modern contemporary senses is ahistorical.
