Biden seemed to be putting on a performance with his State of the Union address. He seized the opportunity the Republicans gave him when they heckled him and he painted them in a corner on Social Security and Medicare. He took what they gave him and used it against them. And the official Republican response didn't even try to appeal to a wide audience and instead focused on right-wing culture war issues and grievances. The difference between the two speeches was stark.

We mentioned how you know the response to the State of the Union. I think the era where we had this era where Republicans like at the Tea Party Like Sarah Huckabee Sanders types would come out, they would try and deliver their speech to the American public writ large and it would destroy their careers. right? because remember Bobby Jindal. they all come out and they try and do this. and it wasn't just that Marco Rubio was doing you know drinking the water and this and that. it was like they were talking to a broader audience. and it's very difficult to talk to both audiences simultaneously. Sarah Huckabee Sanders saved her career in my estimation by not even attempting to talk to the entire country. she's talking only to the right-wing there. and Biden you wrote about this I felt the same way that night I think Emma did too that State of the Union Address and all my problems I have with Biden was in some respects astonishingly. I mean he got them to put on record publicly commit to not touching Social Security and Medicare. which they're all the yelling that they did basically just made sure that it was in the news for like four or five days. In every poll you've ever looked at that talks about who you trust more in Social Security and Medicare it says, Democrats. I mean it was crazy what he did in that speech. and you know he ignored a lot of things that he should have talked about but you know I don't take that speech seriously as anything other than like a brief performance. but it could actually have material implications for politics going forward. It absolutely could and you know as you say it's a performance. and this was one of the few times maybe the only time that I've ever seen a president actually kind of use it as a performer. yes. he understood that this inner that that he's there and I don't know if it's instinctive or if he thought it through it doesn't really matter. that you know they knew that I'm sure they were aware of the possibility that this freak show was going to act out. I mean you know, of course, they were. they didn't know exactly when or over what issues.
