To prevent another East Palestine is actually very simple IF you have the political courage to do what needs to be done. Joe Biden's administration has long ignored requests to roll back Trump's stoppage of an Obama-era rule that may have stopped this disaster from happening. Now that the whole country is watching, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has yet to say whether that rule will be implemented or not.

So I mean let's specifically talk about that so there's really two sorts of almost like silos of things that led to this in terms of I mean there's a lot of different factors obviously. But what could have been done differently? you know we don't know why that axle was on fire. but we do know that there are plenty of times when these trains have to stop. and if they're fighting regulations about the speed at which these things travel that stopping becomes more perilous. Let's talk about the breaks. because this seems to be sort of the most obvious example of this. and how this company, in particular, went from sort of touting these breaks as you know potential revolutionary or you know safety features to forget about that. so I do a lot of Stories on corporate malfeasance and corporate capture regulators. and this story still blew my mind. Basically right now freight trains in the U.S. have braking systems that were designed in 1868. and essentially they stopped trains car by car. one at a time. and trains are getting very long. The one that derailed in East Palestine had 150 cars. I think it was nearly 10 000 feet long. Why are they that long now? because that's also part of the story like each one of these elements is a part of the story of them trying to just maximize their profits at the sake of safety. yeah so my understanding is its sort of like an efficiency thing and you can have fewer workers if you make the trains longer and longer. so this is part of the slashing of the workforce. so rewind to 2007 and Norfolk Southern who's trained just derailed in East Palestine starts touting this new braking system which is far better. they say it can reduce stopping distances on trains by up to 60 percent.
