10:21Now PlayingNew York Times reporters Carl Hulse and Annie Karni report that Sen. Dianne Feinstein suffered more complications from her bout with shingles than previously reported.
Feinstein reportedly experienced post-shingles encephalitis, a rare but serious complication of shingles that can cause brain damage.
The reporters cite unnamed sources who say that Feinstein was hospitalized for several days in February after she developed encephalitis. The condition is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes shingles.
Encephalitis can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, headache, confusion, seizures, and difficulty speaking. In severe cases, it can be fatal.
Feinstein's office has not confirmed the reports of her encephalitis diagnosis. However, the senator did miss several weeks of work in February and March, and she has appeared in public with visible symptoms of shingles, including a facial rash.
Feinstein, 89, is the oldest sitting U.S. senator. She is up for re-election in 2024.
