Vilma is welcome to the program. Thank you. three thousand striking Public School Educators have been striking for I think like what oh it's seven days. seven days. And what tells us about what brought you guys to the picket lines. Well you know the job has really changed. I mean teaching has always been hard since before covid and I think covid really exposed how vulnerable our systems are in ways that became all the more apparent to everyone who wasn't working in the school system. And I think we also realized how crucial it is to really sustain and really improve it right? We couldn't really continue with the system we've had. so we really thought that this was an important campaign to really remind people about the kinds of schools that we have an opportunity to really rebuild. And so you know we had seven months of very fruitless negotiations. Very frustrating for everyone. And we really were just stuck. We knew that this was where we had filed for unfair labor practice charges from the district because of the lack of preparedness. Just the lack of seriousness around bargaining. And so that's what ended up that's why we ended up on the line you know? and we were really trying to work really hard trying to avert the strike. We knew that it could have been really hard on our members. But we realized that this was the next step. We had to do it. and we had to remind ourselves too of our own commitment to really improving our schools. And so that's why we were on the line. and you know what? It was absolutely worth it. We needed to be on the line and remind ourselves of our own power.
