7:30Now PlayingEmma hosts Mike German, fellow at The Brennan Center for Justice, to discuss a recent interview he did with Mireya Navarro, the editor-in-chief of Brennan en Español, entitled “Why White Supremacist Groups Attract Latinos to Their Ranks.” Recent events have shed light on the involvement of Latinos in extremist far-right movements with white supremacy beliefs, seemingly contradicting their status as targets of racist hatred. This small but puzzling minority includes individuals like Enrique Tarrio, former leader of the Proud Boys and Cuban-American convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in the January 6 insurrection, as well as figures like Nick Fuentes and Mauricio Garcia, both of Mexican-American descent, with Fuentes being an outspoken white supremacist and antisemite and Garcia being involved in a deadly shooting in Texas. Former FBI agent Michael German, who infiltrated white supremacist groups in the 1990s, explains that such groups are more diverse than commonly assumed and may include people of color who align with a shared ideology or seek association with power. White supremacists may recruit individuals from different backgrounds to expand their reach and improve their public image. This multiracial element complicates government efforts to respond to domestic terrorism threats, as law enforcement often focuses on specific ideological profiles and fails to fully address the violence and criminality underlying these extremist movements. Recognizing and addressing white supremacy's deep roots within the country's history and institutions remains a significant challenge in combating these threats.
