Bill recently experienced a moment of despair when he witnessed the Earth reaching its hottest average global temperature in over 125,000 years. However, after his home in Vermont was affected by severe flooding caused by intense rainfall, he found renewed hope and resilience in the face of the climate crisis. Standing at the pulpit of a church in West Tisbury, McKibben preached about the importance of taking action and rejecting the belief that the Earth is beyond saving. Reflecting on his 35-year career in environmental advocacy, he acknowledged the challenges of effecting change, particularly when facing determined opponents. Still, he emphasized the potential for change when people come together to exchange ideas and take collective climate action. To expand the movement, McKibben established Third Act, an environmental campaign for people aged 60 and over, aiming to inspire older generations to participate in the decarbonization efforts. He believes that science and faith have a powerful relationship, providing both understanding and motivation for action. Despite moments of hopelessness, McKibben finds solace in nature, reminding himself of the planet's beauty and the importance of bearing witness to its state.
