The rally aimed to push the highly profitable shipping giant to agree to a fair contract that includes better wages, equal treatment for part-timers, and improved working conditions, such as air conditioning in trucks. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the need for respect and fairness, pointing out that UPS recorded record profits last year and CEO Carol Tomé received significant compensation. Negotiations between UPS management and Teamsters leaders recently collapsed, leading the company to prepare nonunion drivers in case of a strike. The Teamsters have already voted overwhelmingly in favor of striking if an acceptable deal isn't reached by July 31. While some progress has been made in negotiations, the union believes the company's contract offers still fall short in compensating employees fairly. Teamsters leaders expressed determination to fight for just wages and respect from UPS, despite the company's stance, vowing not to back down. If a strike occurs, it would become the largest single-employer strike in U.S. history.
