4:36Now PlayingThe Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott over a floating barrier erected on the Rio Grande to prevent migrants from crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. The lawsuit seeks the removal of a line of large, bright orange buoys, which the Biden administration claims poses humanitarian and environmental risks. The lawsuit also alleges that Texas installed the barrier without proper authorization near Eagle Pass, a border city. The buoys are part of Texas' intensified border security efforts, which include razor-wire fencing, arrests of migrants on trespassing charges, and sending asylum-seekers to Democratic-led cities in other states. Governor Abbott, in response to the lawsuit, defended Texas' right to install the barrier and criticized President Biden for not doing enough to deter migrants from entering the U.S. The Biden administration contends that illegal border crossings have significantly declined since new immigration rules were implemented in May. Last week, the Justice Department warned Texas to remove the barrier or face legal action, stating concerns about navigation risks, public safety, and humanitarian issues on the Rio Grande River. Mexico's secretary of state also requested the U.S. government's intervention, citing violations of international treaties by the barrier.
