A medical trial which gave people with a severe peanut allergy small amounts of the legume every day has found most became able to tolerate exposure to the allergen.

One of those taking part, Richard Lassiter, says he had previously been rushed to hospital a couple of times for emergency treatment after accidently eating peanuts.

Now he eats four every morning and is able to tolerate exposure, which can be deadly to those with an allergy.

Professor Stephen Till, who led the research, explains: “The principle of desensitisation is that you expose someone who’s allergic to a particular allergen in small quantities, so then you gradually increase that over time.

"Two thirds of participants could eventually tolerate four peanuts a day. Some higher amounts.”

However, Professor Till stressed that people with an allergy should not try to copy the study at home and should only ever consume an allergen if it’s under medical supervision.
