During her speech in the Commons, Max Wilkinson of the Liberal Democrats accused the home secretary of using language that "stokes division".
He said he believes Shabana Mahmood's language has been unhelpful. "Acknowledging the challenge facing our nation is one thing, but stoking division by using immoderate language is another."
But Mahmood responded by saying: "I wish I had the privilege of walking around this country and not seeing the division that the issue of migration and asylum system is creating across this country."
She then said that "unfortunately" she is "regularly" called a racial slur, which she repeats in the Commons.
