Uncivilized Claims Israelis “Colonize” the World—My Response

The channel Uncivilized claims that Israelis are not merely traveling, backpacking or moving abroad—they are supposedly exporting a violent “settler mentality” and “colonizing” communities around the world. In this reaction, Rafi Harel examines the documentary’s portrayal of Israeli tourists, former IDF soldiers and liberal Israelis who have relocated to countries including India, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

The documentary connects Israeli backpacking culture, chutzpah, the fear of being a freier—or sucker—and the tendency to push boundaries with Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It argues that even Israelis who leave the country continue to behave like settlers wherever they go.

Rafi acknowledges that some Israelis can be loud, aggressive, impolite or overly willing to test boundaries. However, he challenges the attempt to turn the behavior of individual tourists into a sweeping indictment of Israeli society, Jewish identity and Zionism.

Are Israelis uniquely guilty of this behavior, or is the documentary applying a political narrative to conduct found among tourists and immigrant communities across the world? And can legitimate criticism of Israeli culture be separated from anti-Israel propaganda?
