Melanie Phillips Warns the West Is Sleepwalking Toward Disaster

Melanie Phillips delivers a forceful warning to Britain, Europe, and the United States: wake up and confront the threats facing Western civilization before it becomes too late.

Speaking at the JNS International Policy Summit, Phillips argues that the West fundamentally misunderstands the war being waged against Israel, the Jewish people, and Western democratic society. She warns that Islamist extremism, the Iranian regime, uncontrolled immigration, and political weakness are creating an increasingly dangerous situation.

Phillips contends that Israel understands something much of the West has forgotten: negotiation cannot succeed when an enemy interprets compromise as weakness. She argues that America and Europe possess the power to defend themselves but increasingly lack the willingness to accept the cost of doing so.

In this reaction, Rafi Harel examines Phillips’s comments about Iran, Islamic extremism, multiculturalism, Britain’s grooming-gang scandal, antisemitism, Sharia courts, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Western political establishment’s refusal to acknowledge uncomfortable realities.

Phillips also argues that Israel has returned to its historic identity as a “warrior nation”—one prepared to defend itself with or without international approval. Her message is that Israel may ultimately serve as an example to Western countries that have forgotten how to protect their culture, citizens, and way of life.
