Japan is facing a major dilemma: the country desperately needs foreign workers, but growing numbers of Japanese voters do not want to repeat what they believe happened in Europe.
In this reaction, Rafi Harel examines a report about rising Japanese nationalism, tougher immigration policies and growing tensions involving foreign communities—including Kurdish migrants and Muslims living in Japan.
Japan has one of the world’s oldest populations, a record-low birth rate and a serious labor shortage. Foreign workers are becoming increasingly important to the Japanese economy, yet nationalist politicians and activists argue that large-scale immigration could threaten public order, national identity and Japan’s traditional culture.
The report also follows a Muslim immigrant from Sri Lanka who has lived in Japan for decades and says anti-foreigner hostility comes from only a small minority. Others argue that Japan needs a stronger integration system, including Japanese-language education and equal access to schools.
Can Japan solve its population crisis without embracing Western-style mass immigration? Or will stricter policies make its economic and demographic problems even worse?
