9:55Now PlayingI'm very lucky that I live near the fantastic Cathlapotle plank house. This Chinook plank house has been built in the traditional style to educate people today about Chinook culture and provide a space for Chinook ceremonies.
We can learn a lot from Cathlapotle, from the excavations, to first hand accounts, to Chinook oral history we can get a sense of what their civilization was like before Europeans arrived in the Americas. For me, there's nothing more interesting than
Currently the Chinook are going through serious legal battles to get federally recognized by the US government. Federal recognition is very important for the future of the Chinook as it would help preserve their traditional way of life (such as hunting and fishing rights) and hopefully secure access to funds and land which is by rights theirs.
