as posted by the channelHarry talks with Marc Schultz, the Associate Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, about his and Robert Waldindger’s book, The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness. In 1938 Boston researchers undertook an in-depth study of 724 men, a combination of Harvard undergraduates and disadvantaged teenagers from Boston. The study since has grown into the longest in-depth longitudinal study on human life in recorded history, expanding to cover the spouses, children, and grandchildren of the original cohorts, and still going strong 85 years later. The Good Life sets out a series of lessons derived from this priceless, one-of-a-kind data set. The study drives home our benightedness about what makes us happy and the preeminent role of relationships–from life-partners to chance encounters—in our emotional and physical well-being. In addition to distilling the data, the book also imparts practical exercises for upping our relationship game no matter how threadbare or robust our lives of relationships may be.
