1:23Now PlayingIf you’re Dismissive Avoidant, vulnerability can feel uncomfortable… unnecessary… even unsafe.
Not always in an obvious way. Sometimes it shows up as disconnecting from your emotions. Minimizing your needs. Avoiding deep conversations. Pride in being “low maintenance.”
But underneath that pattern is often a deeper association:
Vulnerability = weakness.
Vulnerability = shame.
Vulnerability = helplessness.
Vulnerability = being unsafe.
These beliefs don’t come from nowhere.
When your needs were overlooked, dismissed, or met with messages like “big boys don’t cry” or “be strong,” your nervous system learned that opening up leads to pain not connection. So of course you adapted. Of course you became self-reliant. Of course you learned to need less.
The challenge? The very strategy that once protected you can quietly block the intimacy you actually want.
When you understand why vulnerability feels unsafe, you can start separating old conditioning from present-day reality and finally build relationships where being known feels empowering instead of threatening.
Do you notice yourself pulling away or shutting down when things start to feel emotionally vulnerable?
