10:44Now PlayingAuthor and activist Harsha Walia joins Francesca this week to discuss the massive farmers’ movement that is currently taking place in India. Harsha explains that three new laws aimed at market reform passed in the Indian legislature during the pandemic. Prime Minister Narenda Modi’s government introduced the legislation.
The laws did a few things, including increasing privatization of the agricultural sector (the majority of Indian farmers are subsistence farmers, which inherently means that they don’t have any surplus to sell) and removing minimum support pricing, which guaranteed farmers a minimum income via state subsidies.
Tens of thousands of protesters have been camped outside of New Delhi for MONTHS, with new caravans arriving every day. In late November, 250 million people across India participated a general strike and marches for the cause in what is estimated to be the largest protest in history.
Farmers’ unions have not been able to reach any agreement with the government, and although India’s Supreme Court has temporarily suspended the laws and proposed an extension of the suspension, the protestors are unwilling to relent until they are repealed.
Comedian, writer, activist, and organizer Nato Green also joins Francesca this week.
