7:22Now PlayingFrancesca is joined by comedian, writer, and actor Danielle Perez, and they delve into the muy complicado world of stonks. Wall Street. Does anyone understand it? No, lol! But there are hedge funds and stocks and buying and selling and short selling and things like that. It’s like a video game, only with a lot of secrets and massive consequences for people who aren’t even playing, who refuse to play, who simply hate the Stonk Market. But it could kill us all!
Just listen to this: Hedge funds were trying to short the value of the company GameStop, and even though those guys wear suits and are rich, they got got by a bunch of people on Reddit. The Redditors in question saw the short coming, and they countered the devaluation of the stock — by A LOT. GameStop went from a valuation of $2 billion to $24 billion. People are pretty happy! People are violently angry! Chaos! It’s a volatile nightmare! The rich people always win and now they’re not so sure so they want regulations against normies getting in on their tricks. THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO BE THE ONLY ONES ROBBING THE SYSTEM, OKAY???
