10:05Now PlayingLast week, Texas was hit with a major snowstorm that left millions without power and water when power plants, powered by natural gas and water, froze. Texas’s power grid is not connected to any neighboring states — it is completely independent — leaving the state to fend for itself, which went, to say the least, badly.
Texas’s energy system is not federally regulated (that’s why it’s separate from neighboring states). The grid is regulated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which allowed companies to bypass oversight that would have forced them to plan for this type of catastrophic failure. Specifically, power equipment needs to be “winterized” to withstand the temperatures that hit Texas last week.
Many Texans were without power and/or water for several days. There were water and food shortages across the state, and more than 80 people have died as a result of the storm to date. Others were trapped inside their homes, without utilities, hoping that they and their children didn’t freeze.
Meanwhile, the cost of all of this falls to consumers. That’s right: The money that companies saved by not properly weatherizing equipment and avoiding regulation nearly entirely will be passed on to their customers who didn’t lose power. The market rates for utilities soared as these people tried to keep warm, and they’re receiving bills as high as $10,000.
