10:40Now PlayingFrancesca Fiorentini is joined by historian, writer, author, and the Gary B. Nash Professor of American History at UCLA Robin D.G. Kelley along with comedian, writer, activist, and organizer Nato Green. Professor Kelley lays out his thoughts concerning anti-racist movements and economic justice movements, and how they’ve historically been set at odds with one another. This is a counterintuitive line of thought, Kelley says, as racial justice and economic justice are inextricably intertwined with one another. Never mind Conservatives, Kelley says, Liberals often find racial violence abhorrent yet aren’t in favor of measures like corporate accountability, single-payer healthcare, social safety nets, and so on. Well, if you loathe the injustice of racial inequality, you’re going to have to move left — far left — when it comes to your fiscal thinking, libs.
Poor people become trapped in cycles of poverty, and it’s not a bug, it’s a feature of U.S. capitalism, which is very much intertwined with racial hierarchy. This aspect of capitalism is baked into the cake — the rich can get richer more easily if the poor stay poor, or even better, if they become more impoverished.
Professor Kelley discusses the history of the U.S. and the different groups that were forced to stay at the bottom rung of the economy: immigrant groups such as the Irish, Jewish people, and Asian people. As long as a group occupies the lowest part of the economy, the highest part of the economy can gather more than their fair share. This is racial capitalism, and Black and brown people have occupied the bottom sector of the U.S. economy for a LONG time.
