Anna discusses the contrast in clarity of messaging when asking people to think of Trump’s positions on certain issues compared to the Democratic Party’s position on the same issues. Well … Trump tends to keep it dangerously “simple,” shall we say, which makes it memorable, while the Democratic Party often makes things far more complicated than necessary, ultimately deciding not to do the hard work of standing up for issues that matter the most to constituents (and maybe don’t make some donors ecstatically happy).
Anna goes on to talk about the way electoral money is spent when you’re a candidate running as a Democrat: “cut and paste” tv ads, the same consultants that advise every other candidate — in short, any issue that is personally important to you will not be a part of your campaign. Any issue that is blatantly important to every constituent in the state but is ignored because of financial influence will not be a part of your campaign.
These things are not a surprise, but Anna’s personal experience is eye-opening. The Democratic Party usually works for big-money donors, but with progressive upstarts proving that working for the people can win elections, is it changing its tune?
