For the first time in nearly 13 years, Britney Spears was allowed to testify in court, where she openly denounced the conservatorship her father forced her into in 2008. Prior to this, her ability to speak publicly on this matter had been practically forbidden. According to her testimony, Spears was only informed that it’s possible to be released from her father’s conservatorship very recently, and her lawyer has allegedly been obfuscating and delaying any possibility for Spears to take the necessary steps to do this.
She further noted that her lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham III, advised her not to take the stand and to stay quiet. After the trial, when asked about Britney’s words, Ingham said “These are entirely her words,” insinuating that he likely won’t follow through on many of the things his own client demanded. Regarding her own family, Britney had this to say: “I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you. I also would like to be able to share my story with the world, and what they did to me, instead of it being a hush-hush secret to benefit all of them.”
A conservatorship, also known as guardianship, is a mechanism that allows a court-appointed adult to have full legal control over the affairs of another adult who has been deemed incapable of living independently. Usually, this is done in the case of severe cognitive impairment, however conservatorships overall should probably be ended for good.
For some idea as to how this impacts her, this is what Britney had to say about the level of control she’s currently under: "I was told right now in the conservatorship, I'm not able to get married or have a baby. I have an IUD inside of myself right now, so I don't get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won't let me go to the doctor to take it out because they ... don't want me to have children — any more children… So basically this conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good," she told the court.
