7:28Now PlayingLast week, the US government moved with unprecedented speed, not to secure voting rights for those currently under threat of losing it, not for an infrastructure bill that would rebuild our crumbling bridges and invest in sustainable transportation, but to make Juneteenth a national holiday. This is very much a welcome move, but in a very real sense it’s the least that full Democratic control of government could give us.
On the one hand, it’s worth celebrating that the United States finally has a national holiday to commemorate the end of chattel slavery (outside of prisons), but on the other hand we’re worried that many people will take their ball and go home with the false belief that our nation’s reckoning with slavery is over. Going forward, we must redouble our efforts to organize around the fight against capitalist racism in the future.
Juneteenth is commemorated each year on June 19th. It originally came out of Galveston, Texas, and has been celebrated continually since 1866. On June 19th, 1865, two years after the Emancipation proclamation, a union general issued General Order No. 3, which proclaimed and enforced the freedom of all the enslaved people in Texas. In 1979, the state of Texas officially recognized it as a paid state holiday.
