It's been a week since Senate Democrats gave their Republican counterparts the votes to go ahead and re-open the government. They say they were promised a vote on healthcare subsidies. But what’s the real reason?
It made no sense to most Democratic voters that Senate Democrats would be the first to balk when they swept the November 4th elections and Trump knew the shutdown was killling him politically. Sure so are the Epstein files, but Democrats had everything going for them to hold the line and defend healthcare subisides.
Maybe they were more interested in defending something else? Emma Vigeland and Sam Seder of The Majority Report have another theory which is the preservation of the filibuster. The filibuster in the Senate means any legislation needs 60 votes to pass. Often Democrats don’t have those votes and the filibuster is helpful cover to prevent getting some of the most progressive legislation done. If you want to protect big business, you can always say the filibuster stopped you from passing universal paid family leave or a minimum wage hike or other things that might challenge your donors.
