As many focus on what the World Cup says about colonialism, remember that the Argentine National Football Team has historically been the biggest symbol of anti-colonialism. When Diego Maradona beat England in 1986 in Mexico City, with both one of the most beautiful goals ever and the "Mano de Dios", it was more than just a game. Argentina had just been defeated by the far superior England in Margaret Thatcher (and the military junta's) cruel Falklands War. This is on top of England's long history of attempting to colonize Argentina and Uruguay dating back to 1806.

I offer a different opinion on the anti-Argentine hate both as a journalist and as a fan who reported on everything from social movements to women's soccer in the country. Did you know that anarchists and communists founded some of Argentina's first football clubs?

All this being said, I love how much Egypt has stood up for Palestine, and sadly Argentine society has been woefully behind on truly addressing Zionism.
