Donald Trump Promises His New Legal Army for Police Officers
"President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice to create a federal legal defense program for law enforcement officers, via a new executive order.
This program, according to the President, will establish a mechanism to provide legal compensation and pro bono support for officers facing liability related to their official duties.
The directive, signed on Monday, is part of the "Strengthening and Unleashing America's Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens" executive order, which outlines actions to enhance the federal government's fiscal and legal support for state and local law enforcement agencies.
Some of the most high-profile lawsuits against police officers occurred during the Black Lives Matter protests when, according to a former defense secretary, Trump asked advisers whether protesters could be shot. This executive order would make it easier for police officers to get legal support in claims against them."
