If You Think God Is REAL, You NEED To See This

Professor Brian Greene, theoretical physicist at Columbia University and one of the world's leading string theorists, explains why he believes God is a human creation, why religion was invented to quell our fear of death, and why he prays even though he's certain no one is listening.

Greene is careful and respectful, but his position is clear. The kind of God many people describe, an anthropomorphic being sitting on a throne in a heavenly place, feels to him like a human creation, though a wondrous one. He doesn't see religion as an enemy of science. Instead, he sees it as a structure designed to quell our existential anxiety. Where did religion come from? He traces it to our ancestors recognizing that they would die. He describes ancient burial caves where the grave goods (animal teeth stitched together, objects that would take a single person years to create) were buried with the dead. Why spend that time? Because our forebears imagined death was not the end, that the individual would need those goods on their journey into the afterlife. That fear, that death is too terrifying to imagine as the end, is where Greene sees the glimmers of religious sensibility emerging.

He shares his own practice honestly. Raised culturally Jewish, he does pray on occasion. But he does not believe he's praying to an actual God. When Steven asks who he's praying to, Greene says: the universe, recognizing that the prayer will fall on deaf ears because there's nothing out there to hear it, but it makes him feel better. He allows the scientific side of his mind and the irrational human side to each have their place.
