The conversation centers on red light therapy, now a booming field with hundreds of devices from helmets to hairbrushes. Picard explains the science in simple terms. Light is energy, and for light to do something in biology, something in the body has to resonate with it. The cellular antenna for red light appears to be the mitochondria, specifically an enzyme called cytochrome C oxidase. When red and infrared light penetrate your tissue (through skin, even through the skull and into the brain), they appear to help the mitochondria transform energy more efficiently.
He walks through a striking study on blood glucose. When researchers shined red light on people's backs as they consumed a large dose of glucose, the spike in blood sugar was smaller than normal. They measured energy metabolism through the breath (oxygen in, CO2 out) and found that the people under red light had slightly higher metabolism. The theory: the light helped the electrons from the glucose flow more efficiently through the mitochondria, so blood sugar didn't spike as high.
