A Trucking Giant Just Purged 35,000 Trucking Companies

Landstar has removed more than 35,000 carriers from its approved network since 2022 as the trucking industry tightens its standards around safety, compliance, cargo theft and freight fraud.

Those are legitimate problems. Safety matters. Fraud is costing the trucking industry enormous amounts of money. But there's another question that deserves attention: what happens to legitimate small carriers and owner-operators caught in the middle?

Large trucking companies have compliance departments, legal teams, established insurance programs and thousands of trucks over which to spread those costs. A small carrier may have only a handful of trucks — and a single violation, disputed report or risk flag can have an enormous impact on its ability to access freight.

In today's video, I discuss Landstar's shrinking approved-carrier network, increasingly sophisticated carrier-vetting systems, growing broker liability concerns, and whether an industry attempting to eliminate bad actors could unintentionally accelerate the consolidation of trucking into the hands of larger companies.

As an owner-operator myself, I'm absolutely in favor of keeping unsafe carriers off America's highways. But protecting the public and protecting legitimate small businesses don't have to be mutually exclusive.

The question is whether we're getting that balance right.
