Vice President Harris will open the Senate for the 119th Congress on Friday afternoon, swearing in members as the GOP prepares to take control of the upper chamber.

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) is poised to take the reins as majority leader, after the Senate was flipped red during the 2024 election. GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) announced in February that he would step down from his leadership post.

On the Democratic side, Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) will stay on as leader.

The swearing-in ceremony comes as the House prepares for a contentious Speakership vote on Friday.

The event is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. EST.
