Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is fighting to keep his gavel as roughly a dozen conservatives have been tight-lipped on whether they will support him. At least one lawmaker has already openly voiced his opposition for Johnson.
The briefing also comes after the New Year’s Day attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas have left the U.S. reeling with fear of military extremism and potential political violence.
The attack in Louisiana left 15 dead, including the suspect — a U.S. citizen and former Army soldier — who drove a rented pick-up truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. Law enforcement found a pro-ISIS flag in his vehicle and past social media posts that were sympathetic to the Islamic State. The man who died in a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside of Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas was identified as an active service member.
President Biden and first lady Jill Biden are set to travel to New Orleans next week.
Biden also announced Friday that he will block the sale of U.S. Steel to Japanese-owned Nippon Steel following a yearlong review.
The event is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m. EST.
