10:45:41Now PlayingThe Senate is set for an overnight marathon voting session Thursday, known as a “vote-a-rama,” as Republicans look to clear a key hurdle in delivering on President Trump’s legislative agenda.
The vote-a-rama refers to a blitz of successive votes on amendments to the budget resolution, which is slated to begin on Thursday evening and could last sometime into the wee hours of Friday morning.
The budget resolution unlocks a process known as reconciliation, which Republicans are aiming to use to enact Trump’s policy goals without Democratic support.
The Senate’s blueprint outlines upward of $300 billion in new spending to beef up border security and national defense that Republicans hope to offset with other spending cuts in the final package that results from the process.
Trump on Wednesday endorsed the House’s strategy of passing his entire agenda in a single reconciliation bill over the Senate’s two-track plan. Republicans in the upper chamber intend to pass a second bill later in the year to tackle extending the president’s tax cuts.
But the Senate GOP is barreling forward regardless.
Voting is expected to begin around 5:00 p.m. EST.
