Republican lawmakers on Tuesday raced to squash internal divisions over the Epstein files, launching a series of moves designed to appease those demanding more information be released on the late financier and convicted sex offender. The tension comes as Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has partnered with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) to collect signatures on a discharge petition that would force a vote on his bill to require more transparency in the case.
Following a closed-door meeting with the disgraced financier’s victims, the House Oversight Committee released the files that were turned over by the Justice Department following a subpoena.
The news conference also comes as lawmakers navigate another government spending fight with Democrats, including how to factor in a new effort by the White House to cancel nearly $5 billion in funding previously approved by Congress through “pocket rescissions.”
Their remarks are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EDT.
