House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will speak with reporters Friday afternoon as Republicans cast much of the blame on Democrats and their health care demands for the government shutdown, now in its third day.

Jeffries suggested on Thursday that public pressure could force Republicans and President Trump back to the negotiating table. Though Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) dismissed the comments.

The finger pointing highlights the position the parties have adopted in the early stages of the shutdown — and the challenges they face in getting out of it.

The Democratic leader’s comments come as the Senate is set to vote on dueling stopgap funding bills that could reopen the government.

The press conference is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
