The stalemate has let to tension, including sparring between Jeffries and his Republican colleagues after he refused to support a short-term extension of health insurance premiums.
Senators departed Washington late Thursday after another vote on the stopgap bill failed to move the needle. The lapse in funding is now expected to hit the two-week mark, as Monday is a federal holiday.
