The Trump administration has argued, as tensions rise with Venezuela, that it does not need congressional approval to conduct the military operations. The moves have sparked a rift within the GOP, and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) said last week that he is in “survival mode.”
The remarks also come as a handful of Republican dissenters seek to use a discharge petition to force a vote on legislation to bar lawmakers from stock trading and to impose additional sanctions on Russia as the war in Ukraine nears four years.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
