Noem on Tuesday faced fierce questioning in the Senate, where she received a chilly reception from even Republicans. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) unleashed a 10-minute tirade he described as a performance review and Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) raised an eyebrow over a $220 million ad campaign that he said “boosted” her name recognition.
The hearing comes as Democrats press for reforms to DHS’s tactics when enforcing President Trump’s deportation agenda and as the secretary has been criticized over her handling of the role.
Many GOP lawmakers have pointed to the recent strikes on Iran to ramp up pressure on their Democratic colleagues to reverse course amid fears of a wider Middle East conflict — to no avail thus far.
