23:26Now PlayingLindsay Clancy has admitted killing her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts in January 2023. What her trial is deciding is not whether she did it, but whether she was criminally responsible when she did.
This episode is not a verdict. It is about two things that have been running alongside the case and getting less attention than they deserve.
The first is her medical treatment. According to evidence presented at trial, Lindsay was prescribed 13 different psychiatric medications from multiple providers in the months before, while actively seeking help, including inpatient psychiatric care. So who was coordinating that? Who was holding the whole picture? Who was responsible for noticing it was not working?
The second is the culture that has grown up around this case online — and the content that existed before it, where contempt for children became a genre.
Understanding postpartum mental illness and justifying what happened to three children are not the same thing. This episode argues for the first and refuses the second.
I have experienced postpartum. I believe women need somewhere safe to say the ugly truth. I also believe Cora, Dawson and Callan cannot become supporting characters in their mother's story.
Follow the evidence wherever it goes. Hold doctors accountable if the evidence establishes failures. Hold pharmaceutical companies accountable if the evidence establishes harm. And stop turning contempt for children into content.
