16:35Now PlayingThe suspected attacker behind the deadly Berlin Pride attack has been killed by police. His name is Abdul Balut, a 21-year-old German citizen born in Germany to a family with Lebanese roots. He drove a van into the largest Pride celebration in Berlin near the Brandenburg Gate, then got out with a machete and stabbed people. One woman is dead. 29 are injured. And Germany knew exactly who he was at every single stage of this story.
In 2024, Abdul Balut was publishing ISIS propaganda on his Instagram account. In 2025, he traveled to Lebanon with the specific goal of making his way into Syria to join the Islamic State. He was in contact with people he believed were ISIS members. Lebanese authorities arrested him and a military court sentenced him to three months in prison. He served that sentence, returned to Germany in November, and German authorities arrested him at the airport. A Berlin juvenile court convicted him of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state of Germany. He was sentenced to one year and ten months in youth custody. And then they let him out.
Why? Because he said sorry. He claimed he had distanced himself from ISIS. The court gave him credit for time already served and accepted his confession. The prosecutors did not accept this, they argued the sentence was too lenient and appealed. That appeal was still pending when he drove into the Pride celebration. The de-radicalization workers assigned to him told authorities his supposed transformation was not genuine. Their third and final evaluation was scheduled for the day after the police killed him. Germany had every warning at every stage. This was not an immigration failure, he was born in Germany. This was an institutional failure. And enough is enough.
