California State University accused of spending $42M in public funds on aid for immigrants

Across the U.S., some universities are under scrutiny over how taxpayer dollars are being spent -- and whether certain programs violate federal law.

California State University’s system has reportedly spent $42 million in public funds on free legal services for immigrants, including deportation defense.

Campus Reform reporter Emily Sturge said students, along with their immediate family members, as well as faculty, staff and alumni, are using the services. She said, according to the University’s statistics from 2023, that amounts to 21,000 people who benefitted.

"Two years later, I expect it’s been many more people who have benefitted from these services,” Sturge said during a one-on-one interview Wednesday with The National News Desk’s Angela Brown.

"Americans are being saddled with the bill for defending people who are here illegally, and the Department of Justice is saying that this is actually discriminatory,” she added. “This is violating federal law by providing state-funded resources and programs for people who are here illegally while not providing resources like that to American citizens.”
