Former advisor says Trump's new tariff threats aim to secure favorable US trade deals

President Donald Trump is turning up the heat on global trade, as he said new tariffs on semiconductors and chips could be unveiled soon.

It's a move that could impact everything from smartphones to cars.

And that's just the start, as another round of tariffs is slated to kick in on Thursday, targeting more than 60 countries.

Former Trump White House economic advisor Steve Moore said one thing to keep in mind is Trump's "bark tends to be worse than his bite."

"He puts out these very strict directives and threats on tariffs to get other countries to do things that are in America’s interest and in large part, by the way, even though I’m not a fan of tariff’s he has been able to score some amazing trade deals with, for example, the U.K. last week and other countries, including Europe,” Moore said Wednesday morning during a one-on-one interview with The National News Desk’s Angela Brown.

So, we will see how this plays out,” he added. “But I do think these are being used as threats to force other countries to do things that are in our interest.”
