Ex-Capitol Police chief criticizes legislation for hindering enforcement efforts

As federal law enforcement get ready to replicate a crackdown on crime in Memphis, Tennessee -- just like the nation’s capital -- President Donald Trump warns he'll federalize D.C. police again if the department doesn't cooperate with ICE agents.

Steven Sund is the former chief of Capitol Police. He also served with D.C. police for 25 years.

Sund said certain legislation that has been passed has “tied the hands of police,” including the Sanctuary Values Amendment Act of 2020, which aimed to create a Department of Corrections in D.C. to limit the District's cooperation with federal immigration agencies.

“So, you’ve got city council passing legislation that prevents the police department from effectively enforcing the law,” he told The National News Desk’s Jan Jeffcoat during a one-on-one interview Tuesday. “And then when you have issues with illegal immigrants and the violent crime they commit, you can’t enforce that. You can’t help enforce that with ICE, so there’s a combination of issues.”
