Republicans and Democrats keep government shutdown after disagreeing on federal healthcare spending

President Donald Trump is seizing an opportunity during the government shutdown to cut back on programs and threaten mass firings to reshape the federal workforce.

Capitol Hill will most likely remain quiet on Thursday as Congress takes a day off in observance of Yom Kippur and the Senate is forced to pause arguments on who is to blame.

Another vote is scheduled for Friday on the two bills related to government funding: the Democratic proposal, which includes health care provisions, and the Republican stopgap bill.
