As King, Charles III is constitutionally required to remain above politics. Any political involvement could cause a constitutional crisis and jeapoardise the monarchy. But, as the New Statesman environment correspondent points out, Charles was a "hugely important figure" in the movement to combat climate change. In this video, India Bourke and contributing writer Martin Fletcher discuss Charles' green credentials, and whether he will be able to remain above politics when it comes to the topics he cares most about. In particular they address whether the "stubborn" King could clash with the "doctrinaire" Prime Minister Liz Truss over the environment and other policy issues.
There have been signs that Prince William will take the mantle as a royal advocate for climate action, following in his father’s footsteps by campaigning and lobbying for green issues. But India Bourke argues that for William to live up to the King Charles III's climate legacy, he will need “to surpass it.”
