Martin Luther King, Jr.'s daughter is mocking a widely panned Pepsi commercial that shows Kendall Jenner ending a protest by offering a can of soda to a police officer.
Bernice King, the late civil rights leader’s youngest child and CEO of The King Center, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi. In the ad, which debuted Tuesday, Jenner is seen ditching a photo shoot to join a protest on a city street. The 21-year-old fashion model then approaches a police officer standing guard at the protest and hands him a Pepsi, to cheers from the crowd as he accepts the drink with a grin.
Many social media users pounced on the promotional spot titled “Jump In,” accusing Pepsi of trying to cash in on the Black Lives Matter movement.
The beverage giant told CNN that the commercial “reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey.”
Bernice King, the daughter of legendary civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., has added her voice to the criticism sparked by Pepsi's controversial protest ad. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Daughter Slams Pepsi Protest Ad in One Tweet. The commercial, which was released Tuesday as a two-and-a-half minute video, depicted reality TV star and model Kendall Jenner walking through a demonstration. As police stare down the protesters, Jenner approaches one of the officers to hand him a Pepsi. The gesture appears to defuse tensions, which prompts cheers from the protesters.
The ad quickly became the target of derision, with many calling it "tone-deaf." Critics also argued Pepsi was co-opting the imagery of recent minority-led protest movements for profit. On Twitter, people pointed out that the scene of Jenner handing a Pepsi to an officer closely resembled a widely-shared photo of a Black Lives Matter protester being arrested during a 2016 protest in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
On Wednesday, King took to Twitter to share her thoughts about the controversy, posting a photo of her father being pushed back by police officers during a protest. In a particularly cringeworthy bit of timing, the Pepsi ad's Tuesday release came on the same day of the 49th anniversary of King's assassination in Memphis, Tennessee: "Pepsi was trying to project a global a message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly, we missed the mark, and we apologize...We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position." In a statement Wednesday, Pepsi announced the ad would be pulled immediately. MLK Jr.’s daughter takes jab at tone-deaf Pepsi ad. Martin Luther King Jr.’s youngest daughter joined the growing chorus of people decrying Pepsi’s tone-deaf ad featuring Kendall Jenner — and the company responded by saying it meant no disrespect to the slain civil l rights leader. In the tweet, King included a photo of her father clashing with police as he links arms with fellow demonstrators.
The Pepsi ad, which the company has since yanked in response to widespread criticism, features Jenner ditching a photo shoot in favor of a protest. At the end of the commercial, the reality TV star hands a policeman a Pepsi can, making him smile. The soda company responded to King’s tweet Wednesday afternoon, saying Pepsi didn’t intend to disrespect the civil rights icon.
With one powerful image of her father, the 54-year-old daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King showed Pepsi just how tone-deaf their commercial featuring Kendall Jenner really is. The commercial, released on Tuesday, shows a bunch of millennials protesting for some unknown reason. MLK Jr. Pepsi Ad. MLK Jr. Pepsi Advertisement.
