At the eastern edge of Kentucky, about 15 miles from West Virginia, you can get a plate of Salisbury steak with all the fixings for about $10. You can grab a pack of smokes from numerous drive-thru cigarette stands. And the local claim to fame is celebrated on a blue and white roadside sign as you drive into town.
“Welcome to Flatwoods, Kentucky. Home of Billy Ray Cyrus,” the slightly dented sign says with guitar strings superimposed over a drawing of Kentucky.
The town is also part of Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, home to the “worst Republican” in Congress – U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie. That’s according to President Donald Trump, whose public feud with Massie has launched the Northern Kentucky district into the national spotlight. The May 19 congressional primary, pitting Massie against a Trump-endorsed opponent, will test the power of two popular Republicans.
The Enquirer talked to voters − at a hair salon, diners, grocery stores and political rallies – in the 21-county district, which Massie has represented for almost 15 years. While there are no independent polls on the primary, voters throughout the district tend to have strong feelings about Massie, one way or the other. But who's most likely to win the primary depends on who you ask.
"Thomas is sort of like family to us," said Phyllis Young, who works at Arty's Pizza near Massie's hometown of Garrison.
It's one of Massie's favorite local restaurants and people recognize him when he comes in. Young said he always takes time to talk to people who want to have a word with him personally or about politics.
