Michael Liebowitz vs MadeByJimBob (Jim Bob) — moderated by Sara (The Raging Tomato)
In this deep philosophical debate, we tackle one of the most fundamental questions in political philosophy and ethics:
Where do rights come from?
Michael Liebowitz argues the affirmative: Rights are moral claims grounded in human life as the standard of value. Derived from reason, they enable self-defense, equal treatment, and the pursuit of one’s own happiness without initiating force — making them objective facts of reality rather than mere social constructs.
MadeByJimBob takes the negative: Rights do not objectively “come from” anywhere as inherent or natural entities. They are recent human inventions, often enforced by government monopoly on force. Societies have long operated on duties and obligations rather than individual rights, and claims of inalienable rights collapse under scrutiny or extreme scenarios.
Expect sharp arguments on:
Objective morality vs. constructed rights
Life as the standard of value, reason, and self-defense
Government enforcement, force doctrine, and duties-based societies
Historical and hypothetical examples (lifeboat scenarios, gun ownership, suicide)
Enlightenment ideas, Christian duties, and whether rights are illusions or moral facts
The first ~2 hours feature a structured debate with openings, rebuttals, and closings. Then we switch to full OPEN PANEL GAUNTLET mode — audience members jump in, challenge both sides, drop superchats, and turn it into an intellectual free-for-all.
Warning: This one dives deep into ontology, ethics, and philosophy of law — definitions will be fiercely contested.
